Summer On The Ranch

Summer in Big Sky, Montana is pretty darn hard to beat—warm days, cool nights, no humidity, and lots of sunshine. There are so many things to do at the ranch, and in the mountains surrounding us, that it's impossible for us to list all the options. At the same time, we know that everyone has different interests, so our activity program is designed to fit your interests.

Options include horse back riding, hiking, fly fishing in the blue ribbon Gallatin River that runs along our western border.

Things to Bring

The mountains of Montana are still pretty wild, and the weather can be wild too. The state motto is "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute." It's always a good idea to dress in layers no matter what time of year you visit. Although during most summers it doesn't rain very often or for very long, bring rain gear and an extra pair of shoes. Sweaters and windbreakers are also a good idea-it can be in the 70's or 80's at the ranch, but ten or twenty degrees cooler on a mountain trail ride. Sunscreen is a good idea, especially at our 6,300 ft. above sea level altitude.

Trail Rides

Let Marce Hoffman, our Horse Operations Manager, and his professional wranglers show you why riding is a way of life out here. Our wranglers cover 2,000 trail miles each year and take care of trail maintenance all summer long, so you know you’re in the hands of experts.

Take a ride through high mountain meadows or to the top of 10,000-ft. peaks. You can see the Sunken Forest that natural forces created in 1959, not to mention a wide variety of wildlife including elk, deer, eagles, moose, coyotes, bears, and if you're lucky, maybe even a wolf.

Fly fishing

As every dedicated angler knows, Montana is world-famous for wild trout. Two miles of the Blue Ribbon Gallatin River, made famous as the setting for the fishing scenes in the movie "A River Runs Through It," literally run through our property! We also have a private pond at the ranch, so you don't even have to leave the ranch to enjoy a day on the water.

Even more amazing, within a two-hour radius are some of the most famous fly fishing waters in the world including the Yellowstone, Madison, Henry's Fork, and streams and lakes in Yellowstone Park.

If you'd like to learn how to fish, or if you're an expert who wants to get the inside scoop on all the most productive local techniques, you can hire one of the ranch's guides for the day. Take fly-fishing lessons on our pond, enjoy a walk-and-wade trip on the Gallatin, float the Madison River, or take a horseback trip to a pristine mountain lake. We've got gear for you to rent, from rods and waders to float tubes and flies, or you can bring your own.

Montana is Mecca for millions of trout fishermen the world over, and the 320 is smack dab in the middle of some of the best opportunities for fishing, bar none!
